Course Description

Philosophy as we know it today began in ancient Greece. The word ‘philosophy’ comes from the Greek philosophia, which literally means ‘the love of wisdom’. The discipline began around the 6th century BCE, when Greek thinkers began questioning their inherited creation myths and the tales of the gods and goddesses. Many of them proposed alternative materialistic explanations for natural events and thus the science of physics was born. Philosophy soon developed another dimension when the famous philosopher Socrates began asking questions about morality, virtue, and the way to lead a good life. This course will introduce the history of ancient Greek philosophy, as it developed from it mythological roots, through the early ‘Pre-Socratic’ materialists, to the moral philosophy of Socrates. It will then introduce the life and work of two of the most influential thinkers in human history: Plato and Aristotle. It will examine key concepts and ideas in the history of Greek philosophy and provide the student with a strong grounding for any further philosophical studies
