 Week 1

An Introduction to Growing Your Own – what are the benefits?

 

Deciding where to grow – in the ground, raised beds, containers.

 

How to make a ‘No Dig’ Bed.

 

Compost : the different types of compost available, their uses, how to get the best from them.

 

Pots & Labels : which to use for what purpose, modules, seed trays, re-cycled pots.

 

‘The Living Soil’ : Preparing beds for sowing – what to add for success.

 

Question & Answer Session – and any individual growing queries.

 

 

 

Week 2

Deciding what to grow – planning ahead - what to grow in your garden and when to harvest.

 

Keeping a planting diary.

 

Seeds : different varieties, organic/non organic, open pollinated,  F1 and where to source them for our climate and conditions.

 

How to sow seeds.

 

Hands on sowing – Rocket, lettuce, salad leaves.

 

Question & Answer Session – and any individual growing queries.

 

 

 

Week 3

The Vegetable Families, soil conditions required and crop rotation.

 

Hardening off and planting out seedlings.

 

Crop Protection with fabric cloches, bottle cloches, fleece, enviromesh.

 

How to pot on seedlings.

 

Hands on sowing of suitable seeds.

Week 4

Weed Control & Pest Control – common weeds and pests.

 

Slugs and how to control them the Organic Way. Use of Nematodes.

 

Mulches – types of mulches and how to use them for best effect.

 

Companion planting – what is it and what are the benefits?

 

Hands on sowing of suitable seeds.

 

Question & Answer Session – and any individual growing queries.

 

 

 

Week 5

Making organic feeds for the garden with seaweed, nettles, comfrey, manure.

 

Make your own feed  -  Recipes for feeds.

 

Making Compost - what to put in and what to leave out. How to build & feed your heap, how to use home-made compost.

 

Hands on sowing of suitable seeds.

Week 6

How to look after Fruit Trees and Fruit bushes

 

Fruit pests and diseases

 

Making organic pesticides and fungicides for use on fruit and vegetables.

Week 7

Herbs : Making a Herb Bed or Herb Spiral.

 

Uses of different herbs & demonstration of a range of herbs.

 

Using Green Manures.

Week 8

Common problems in the home vegetable garden – trouble shooting & prevention.

 

When to harvest different crops and how to use/preserve them.

 

Re-cap of last 8 weeks and focus on queries from the class.
